This event invites the key water stakeholders from the megacities in Africa region to exchange experience and share knowledge. After the sharing session, the discussion will help lead to the first step for developing the Africa regional cooperation framework and pave the way to Mayors’ Congress at the Second International Conference “Water, Megacities and Global Change”.
African continent is expected to house most of the new Megacities in the world in this century. Currently only three cities, Cairo, Kinshasa and Lagos are considered Megacities whereas the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan when considered within the Gauteng Province, reaches the mark.
Prior to the Second International Conference “Water, Megacities and Global Change”, UNESCO would like to facilitate the establishment of a regional platform for Africa (MAWAC-AFR), presenting the work plan for developing a regional cooperation framework (Terms of Reference).
The proposed meeting will be an opportunity to:
- Present and exchange the current and future challenges to water security, economic activity and social stability as well as adaptation and mitigation strategies in AFR-based megacities.
- Prepare the Regional Chapter’s participation at the 2nd International Conference “Water, Megacities and Global Change (EauMega).
- Discuss and prepare a work plan for developing a framework and the first draft of Terms of Reference (TOR) of the MAWAC-AFR Regional Chapter.
The meeting intends to invite nominated 1-4 representatives of (1) decision maker, (2) water and wastewater operator, (3) researcher, (4) river basin authority (taking into account gender balance) from the current and emerging megacities of AFR region, including:
- Cairo
- Kinshasa
- Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan
- Lagos
