The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) strengthens knowledge related to oceans and coastal areas by focusing on research and strengthening capacity. Applying this knowledge strengthens the development, management and protection of our marine environment — knowledge which nations can then use to guide them in their decision-making. In addition, the IOC is recognized by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as the primary international organization in marine research and the transfer of marine technology.
