On their 70th founding anniversary, the Turkish National Commission for UNESCO held a Consultative Meeting of National Commissions (NatComs) that are Member States of the UNESCO Executive Board on 12-13 September at the CVK Park Bosphorus Hotel in Istanbul, Turkey.
The meeting was attended by PH NatCom Secretary General Lila Ramos Shahani along with representatives from the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and other Secretaries General from various NatComs. The two-day session focused on the exchange of experiences and sharing of ideas in increasing the visibility of UNESCO at the national level and strengthening regional and international cooperation between and among these NatComs.
Mr. Charaf AHMIMED, Head of UNESCO Transformation Support Unit, led the presentation of the UNESCO Strategic Transformation process. Meanwhile, Ms. Assel Utegenova, Deputy Director of the National Commissions Unit of UNESCO Headquarters, discussed the roles of National Commissions in UNESCO Programmes, Lists and Networks particularly the Memory of the World Programme, Associated Schools Network and UNESCO clubs, UNESCO Chairs/UNITWIN Networks, Biosphere Reserves, UNESCO Global Geoparks, and various UNESCO Conventions.
The participants visited some of Istanbul’s historic World Heritage sites at the end of their 2-day meeting.
